National Forest Inventory England 2025
A closer map of England's woods
The Forestry Commission maps interpreted woodland types from aerial and Sentinel-2 imagery and records larger open spaces inside woodland. Most mapped woods meet a 0.5-hectare and 20-metre-width threshold, with exceptions. Categories are interpreted, not a tree-by-tree field count.
“Is a familiar woodland conifer, broadleaf, young trees, windblow, or recently felled land on this map?”

Before publication, check map version, imagery year, EPSG:27700 coordinates, category definitions, and area thresholds. Internal open areas may be classed as ‘Non woodland’. Do not present image interpretation as a tree-by-tree field survey or infer causes of change from one year.
